Who wants to bring back Hostess Pajamas?

While visiting the California Design, 1930-1965: “Living in a Modern Way” show at LACMA the other day, I peeked inside the aluminum Airstream trailer, admired the reconstruction of Ray and Charles Eames’ living room, and dreamed of owning some of the local pottery, but I was particularly drawn to these Addie Masters hostess pajamas.

Addie Masters Hostess Pyjamas.

This lovely outfit got me thinking about dressing for dinner–when you’re the one doing the cooking. In LA you never really know if friends will show up in jeans and a ponytail or a skirt and heels. Dinner here is, by definition, “casual”  but “casual” can mean different things to different people. As host, you want to make sure everyone–in whatever they’re wearing–is comfortable. (Plus the host doesn’t want to feel over- or under-dressed, either!)

Which is why I’m proposing we bring back the hostess pajama. Call them “palazzo pants,” if you like. How could they not put the room at ease?

Rihanna's wearing them.

They're nice poolside.

Something for everyone.

So, what do you think? Can we start a trend (or follow Rihanna’s)??

I'm a former editor at several lifestyle magazines who's been freelancing since moving from NYC to LA. I call my blog The Chipped Platter to remind us that chips are better than perfection. The platter in question, a round one made by Gien, has traveled the world with me, visited with friends and family, celebrated milestones, and offered sustenance. My cherished Chipped Platter is part of the family. (I love my chipped plates, too!) On this blog, I'll be sharing my adventures of cooking for my family and friends, venturing out into restaurants and learning tips from people I meet. Come along!

What Rihanna is wearing are NOT Classic Hostess Pajamas!! Just Pajamas! the Classics were cut to fit the hips and tapered At the ankle and stopped just short of the top of the foot. they were covered by a long full skirt that was worn open from the waist down, and attached to a matching fitted blouse like top. the pants usually had slit side pockets that the wearer would utilize by pulling the open skirt back just enough to slide the hand into, causing the skirt to “drape open”. they were comfortable, elegant, and even though well covered, sexy. Yhea!!! Bring that back.
